Mindfulness and Meditation
IRIS are now offering weekly meditation sessions on Wednesday mornings from 10.00am to 11.00am. These are open to all, those of all faiths and none; those of you who are new to meditation and those of you who have previously practised and may still currently practise will feel at home in our group. Everyone is welcome to share in the practice. We practise sitting meditation and afterwards there is opportunity to meet and talk over refreshments.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment - whether we are meditating, or driving, or walking, eating, playing music or just being. Increase in research in clinical psychology is demonstrating the importance of mindfulness in clinical practice and in our personal lives. Cultivating the practice of mindfulness means we are not preoccupied by the past or the future, but we open ourselves to live in the present. We do this to slow down, enjoy what is going on around us and to reduce some of the stresses of everyday life. We offer our meditation sessions in a spirit of mindfulness.
Meditation - Do I need to be able to sit on the floor?
You don't need to be able to sit on the floor! You can sit on cushions, chairs or yes - on the floor. There are all sorts of myths about shoulds and oughts in meditation which we hope to dispel. Our aim is to offer a quiet space to rest in and enjoy the present moment. Just come along and practise with us and enjoy your sitting. We sit for up to 30 minutes in silence.
